Talk with Stefan Gronert (Photo curator at Sprengel Museum Hannover, Germany) and Lin Lu (professor for photography at Shanghai Normal University), moderated by Christin Müller (curator of the exhibition with/against the flow*).

Up till now photography from Germany is often associated with the so-called Düsseldorf School and their large format images produced with high artistic and technial standarts. The myth reaches back to 1976 when Bernd Becher was appointed as first professor for artistic photography in Germany. In following two decades three generations of students of Bernd and and Hilla Becher worked on new approaches to documentary photography and conceptual working formats. By leaving the small standard formats of the medium they highly supported the acceptance of photography as art in museums as well as in the art market. Stefan Gronert will discuss the developement of the Düsseldorf School and its critical perception today in Germany whereas Lin Lu talks about its ambivalent influences on artistic photography in China.
